Belief and reality

As far as I know Prof. S. Hawking has abandoned God long long ago. He didn't believe in life after death as well. Now a lot of people are wishing him good luck in the sky. Being his fan, believing his works and ideas how come that people are doing these his that go against those very ideas? To believe in something and practice that in real life is something that lays beyond our capacity.
